Sentieri Primitivi del Sarrabus

Sarrabus – Municipality of San Vito

The trail is located in an area of high environmental and archaeological value, characterised by Mediterranean scrub landscapes, scattered farms and numerous sites of historical interest (nuraghi and Tombe dei Giganti). It is a sparsely populated area with great potential for slow and cultural tourism, which has recently undergone restoration, safety and accessibility improvements to the historic trails. The trail runs through a mountainous area west of the village of San Vito, in the western part of the Bruncu Sa Ucca e Meli mountain range, a territory that encompasses the Bau Sa Perda and Picocca river basins. The route largely follows the ancient San Vito-Burcei road, now partly disused, which for centuries provided a natural link between the two sides of the mountain. It is an evocative route, immersed in Mediterranean scrub, dotted with nuraghi, ancient sheepfolds and evidence of the historic road network, such as retaining walls and stone boundaries still visible along the way. The trail has been restored and enhanced in particular to allow access to one of the most important archaeological monuments in the area: the “Su Presoni” Giants’ Tomb, a valuable testimony to Nuragic civilisation. The site, immersed in an unspoilt and little-known natural setting, was difficult to reach in the past due to the dense vegetation and the poor visibility of the path.

Route description

The route starts from the old SS125 road (km 49.200) and follows a dirt track. After crossing the Riu Sa Perda stream, the route continues with a gentle climb to a fork that leads to the most interesting section, about 3.2 km long, on the old road to Burcei. The path crosses dense vegetation, alternating open stretches with remains of the original carriageway and narrower passages marked by the passage of livestock. Along the way, you cross small streams via fords and gradually climb up to the plateau, where you can see the Nuraghe Miali Pili. A little further on, there is a panoramic rest area. From here, the trail splits: one branch continues towards Burcei, while the other leads to the Tomba dei Giganti di Su Presoni (Giants’ Tomb of Su Presoni) in about 300 metres, through a winding stretch between rocks and Mediterranean scrub.

Accessibility and use

The trail also introduces a strong element of universal accessibility. The trail has been restored for walking, cycling and horse riding. A section of approximately 400 metres has also been equipped for use by blind people, thanks to the installation of a rope handrail that allows them to follow the path through tactile and olfactory stimuli, enhancing the sensory experience of walking.

An evolving journey

The trail is the first part of a larger project to promote the San Priamo Valley, aimed at creating a network of itineraries called Sentieri Primitivi (Primitive Trails), designed to connect and make accessible the numerous archaeological monuments in the area. Future interventions will extend the route towards Rio Ollastu and connect it with the Via dell’Argento and the Burcei area.

Added value

The Sentieri Primitivi del Sarrabus project represents a strategic initiative for the construction of a regional hospitality network based on identity, accessibility and sustainability. A light but durable infrastructure, capable of transforming ancient trails into authentic experiences of discovery, enhancing local heritage and generating new opportunities for the region.

Tips for visitors

For technical documentation on the 5.9 km Fassoni – Su Presoni trail (C 421) (currently in the RES pre-registration phase), we recommend visiting the Forestas website: www.sardegnasentieri.it. The trail is ideal for walking all year round, especially in spring or autumn, when the climate is mild and the flowering vegetation offers extraordinary landscapes. Wear hiking boots and bring plenty of water. Along the way, there are plenty of scenic spots where you can stop for a break or take photographs.
